MEDICARE FAQs

  • Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people aged 65 and older, as well as certain younger individuals with disabilities or specific medical conditions. It differs from other health insurance plans in that it's primarily administered by the federal government, and it typically provides coverage for hospital stays, doctor visits, and prescription drugs.

  • You're typically automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B if you're receiving Social Security benefits when you turn 65. If you're not receiving Social Security benefits, you'll need to sign up for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period, which begins three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months after.

  • Medicare Part A covers hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.

Medicare Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and some medical supplies.

Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare and includes all benefits and services covered under Part A and Part B, and often includes prescription drug coverage as well.

Medicare Part D is prescription drug coverage, available through private insurance companies approved by Medicare.

  • Most people don't pay a premium for Medicare Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working. There are premiums and deductibles associated with Part B, Part C, and Part D, as well as potential out-of-pocket costs like copayments and coinsurance.

  • It depends on whether your doctor or healthcare provider accepts Medicare assignment. Most doctors and providers do accept Medicare, but it's always a good idea to check with them directly.

  • While Medicare covers many healthcare services, it doesn't cover everything. Many people choose to enroll in supplemental insurance, also known as Medigap, to help cover costs like deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.

  • The choice between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage depends on your individual healthcare needs, budget, and preferences. Original Medicare offers more flexibility in choosing doctors and specialists, while Medicare Advantage plans often include additional benefits like vision, dental, and prescription drug coverage.

  • Each Medicare Part D plan has its own formulary, or list of covered drugs. You can compare plans and enroll in Medicare Part D through the Medicare website or by contacting individual insurance companies directly.

  • Yes, Medicare covers a wide range of preventative services, including but not limited to mammograms, colonoscopies, flu shots, and certain cancer screenings.

  • If you continue working past age 65 and have health insurance through your employer or your spouse's employer, you may be able to delay enrolling in Medicare without facing penalties. It's important to understand how your employer-sponsored insurance coordinates with Medicare to ensure you have the coverage you need.

LIFE INSURANCE FAQs

“Life insurance is not something I really thought about. Over the past two years I had the unfortunate passing of my wife and niece. Barbara explained the importance of life insurance and because of her I was able to cover the funeral costs and all of the unpaid bills for my family. She made the process simple and I couldn't be more grateful. I would recommend Barbara to anyone looking for help with life insurance.”

  • Life insurance is a contract between you and an insurance company, where you pay premiums (regular payments) in exchange for a lump sum payment, known as a death benefit, to your beneficiaries upon your death. The primary reason to have life insurance is to provide financial protection to your loved ones in case of your untimely demise. It can help cover funeral expenses, debts, and provide ongoing income to support your family's living expenses.

  • The amount of life insurance coverage you need varies depending on your personal and financial situation. A general rule of thumb is to have a policy that's 10 to 15 times your annual income. However, you'll need to consider your specific circumstances, including your income, debts, age, and the financial needs of your dependents, including future obligations like college tuition.

  • Term Life Insurance, Whole Life Insurance, and Final Expense Insurance are three types of life insurance policies designed to meet different needs:

    Term Life Insurance:

Coverage Duration: Provides coverage for a specific time period or "term," typically ranging from 10 to 30 years.

Purpose: Its primary purpose is to offer financial protection during your most financially vulnerable years, such as while raising a family or paying off a mortgage.

Cost: Generally less expensive than whole life because it does not build cash value and only provides a death benefit if the insured dies within the term period.

Suitability: Best for those seeking affordable coverage with a substantial death benefit over a defined period.

    Whole Life Insurance:

Coverage Duration: Provides lifetime coverage, as long as premiums are paid.

Purpose: Combines a death benefit with a savings component, where a portion of your premium builds cash value that can grow tax-deferred over time.

Cost: More expensive than term life due to the cash value accumulation and the lifelong coverage.

Suitability: Ideal for those looking for both a death benefit and a savings vehicle, potentially to aid in wealth transfer, retirement planning, or long-term financial stability.

    Final Expense Insurance:

Coverage Duration: Also provides lifetime coverage but is specifically intended to cover expenses related to the insured's death, such as funeral costs.

Purpose: To ensure that funeral expenses and other related costs will not be a burden to family members.

Cost: Typically less expensive than regular whole life insurance due to lower coverage amounts.

Suitability: Best for older individuals or those with health issues who want to ensure their funeral expenses are covered without requiring a medical exam.

Each type of life insurance serves distinct needs based on the financial goals and circumstances of the individual, ranging from temporary, high-coverage solutions to smaller, final-expense-focused plans.

  • Yes, you can still get life insurance if you have pre-existing health conditions, but it may affect your insurance premiums and the type of policy you qualify for. Insurers will consider your overall health, the severity of your condition, and how well it's managed when determining your eligibility and premiums. Some insurers specialize in high-risk policies or offer guaranteed issue life insurance, which doesn't require a medical exam but typically comes with higher premiums and lower coverage amounts.

  • To file a life insurance claim, the beneficiaries must submit a death claim form and a certified copy of the death certificate to the insurance company. The insurer will review the claim to ensure it meets the policy's terms and conditions. The time frame for receiving the death benefit can vary but is typically within 30 to 60 days after submitting a valid claim. Some policies may offer expedited processes for smaller advance payments to cover immediate expenses like funeral costs.
